How would Rebecca have interpreted the sketchbook? Hmm…well, I’m guessing she would have completely dismissed it to the extent of not interpreting it at all.
Speaking of Rebecca: how badly have the writers bungled the faith-versus-science element of this season? If you want to see that topic handled capably, watch Cosmos or Battlestar Galactica or (yes) Lost. If you want to see it utterly bungled, watch Under the Dome. I get the feeling this episode was intended to represent a victory of Faith over Science, but even that doesn’t work.
I’m reminded of a scene from Dead Man’s Walk (a prequel to Lonesome Dove), in which a man has died and the survivors are trying to give him a funeral. One character, Bigfoot Wallace, invites the dead man’s friends to say a bit of scripture over the grave, and they all look around sheepishly, obviously not quite cultured enough to be up to the task. One of them, Long Bill, eventually says, “There’s that scripture about them green pastures.”
“So say it, then, Bill,” prompts Bigfoot.
“Well . . . there’s them green pastures,” says Bill. “That’s all I can recall,” he says after a few seconds go by.
His compadres, figuring this is good enough and better by far than nothing, nod as sagely as if the dead man’s grave had just been preached over by one of the apostles.
The faith/science angle on Under the Dome is like that: it’s like somebody said, “Hey, this season should have an undercurrent about the divide between faith and science, with the dome as a catalyst.”
“Hey,” said somebody else, “that’s a great idea!” They then looked around at the occupants of the writers’ room and said, “How do we do that?”
“Well,” said one of the writers after an uncomfortable science, “there’s faith versus science.” To which the other writers nodded sagely, and invented the character Rebecca Pine.
I think they plan to put the Science Teacher under the dome and sorry to disagree with you, she actually did her best to explain science in most possible way, only that the situations are not in favour for her.
I don’t really know what you’re trying to say there, Lucifr, but I assume I disagree with it.
The show has completely bungled the character of Rebecca: their approach to writing her has been inconsistent, annoying, and ineffectual from the first episode onward. When the writers decide to make her seem competent, they have her perform science in as unscientific a way as I have ever seen on television; and when they want her approach to seem iffy, they turn her into a borderline Nazi.
There was no reason why this series couldn’t have taken the idea of examining the ways in which faith and science come at things from different angles, and then used that idea to craft compelling storylines. It just hasn’t happened, and the worst part is that for some reason the writers expect us to believe that the events of “Turn” have caused Rebecca to consider turning her back on science altogether. That’s an appalling viewpoint. From my own point of view, there is no such thing as something science cannot explain: there is only that which we do not yet understand.
And I see no reason for that to negate one’s faith in whatever deity or force one chooses to believe in, either. That would have been a good angle for “Under the Dome” to take, but instead, they’re going with . . . whatever else they’re going with.
Very well said. Hands down.
The podcast team could really use your help. 🙂
Thanks! But I don’t think it’s true; Wayne and Troy do a great job, and they typically make me look at the episodes a different way than I would have otherwise. I think they do a great job!
Thank you so much guys. We really appreciate all of your comments and discussions here, as well as on the Facebook page. You have some excellent insights into Under the Dome, television, Stephen King, etc.
I still love her, her vulnerability and her strength…
I liked a lot of things about this episode, and didn’t like others. Dwight Yoakam and Dean Norris were great; the eight-hands stuff was not. The stuff with Barbie and his dad and the egg was good; the contraction of the dome was not.
If the dome is contracting, we have to assume that it is retaining its essential shape, right? Which I believe would mean that each part of the dome would be moving inward equally. Now, I’m no scientist; far, far from it. On subjects scientific and mathematic, I, represented as a pizza, would consist of dried dough with nothing on it. BUT, common sense indicates to me that if such a thing were happening to the dome, the amount of upheaval caused by it on the underside would have destroyed the entire town. And I suspect it wouldn’t have taken much time; because wouldn’t all that earth have nowhere to go but up? That being the case, wouldn’t anything more than a very minor shift cause utter catastrophe (in terms of streets and buildings’ foundations and whatnot being ripped apart)? Maybe I’m wrong. But I don’t think I am, and if I’m not, then what happened with the dome’s alleged “contractions” this week would maybe have to rank as the single dumbest thing ever done on this series.
Overall, though, I did enjoy the episode. It had a sense of urgency to it, and the Lyle/Big Jim/Pauline stuff was really strong.
There is nothing consistent with the dome. I can’t think of any way that the underground part of the dome is doing the same as the overground part with us seeing what we saw this episode. Or it is just magic there. It just doesn’t many any sense at all.
I feel you. The writers didn’t pay attention to Rebecca Pine when she said “There is a better way, KNOWING”.
I wonder if we’ll find out.
And slow clap at the credits. (oh, I love the acoustic play, Sorry Sir Wayne, age gap? hmmp just kidding)
Im gonna hashtag this episode as BestEpisodeEver. #
And Im sure, all domeheads would agree with me. Right?
I have so many questions not just for this episode but also for this entire show but I guess, Melanie’s right, maybe some questions have no answer. She sounds like Julia, i know right.
But wait, I need to know, We. Because “knowing the answers doesn’t take away the wonders, it only makes it more amazing” and quote that – Rebecca Pine.
That scene I think is the best scene back from day zero under the dome. I honestly cried and Im not ashamed for that because it really is touching. For a second I thought that Melanie is somehow related to Becca, her sister? her aunt? but wait, enough siblings OK? okay.
Big Jim asking if who Melanie is or was? makes me ask myself if did he not know? all this time? So i want to re watch the entire season 2, then i “HELL NO”, i don’t care. I don’t think its necessary, its either the fans or viewers didn’t notice that or they don’t care and let it be. And Ms. Becca too, poor Science teacher transfusing blood to a zombie or a walker.
Is it just me? when Pauline guided by Jims hands was painting, she was initially painting a dome, and guess what, after she’s done, there was no dome at all. Or maybe she used another canvass aka a fresh start, because her visions are kinda tentative? But I also love this scene, full of emotions but i cant ship for PaulJim – yeah Pauline + Jim, because … i don’t wanna start, lets make a separate podcast only dedicated for that. Haha.
And that when Baby Barbs told PapaBarbs about Melanie? Oh cam on! They, folks from the outside world have all the resources/ cameras to track all the events happening inside, the egg, everything but wait, they did not notice a girl popped up from the lake, out in the open. OK they are busy tracking Norrie and Joe’s love affair. Well consider it.
We have a new love team, did i say NEW? Im actually confused and in the process of recalling things. James and Melanie, Oh common writers? Seriously? Julia and Barbie only took ahmm 2 weeks or less to be love birds, and we find it so hard to buy, then we let it be and go on but James and Melanie, less than 5 days and they’re acting or at least Junior oh James so in love and so passionate not to mention the kiss before i let you go. I think that’s just crazy. I think that’s not love, thats obsession.
I think that Papa Barbie is also connected to the Dome, or to the egg. This is crazy but everything is crazy around here so might as well go with the flow. He’s one of the 4 hands, even before Pauline’s squad. Papa Barbie, his wife, plus Melanie’s mother and lets say the unknown. But then, they weren’t up to the egg, but to the one who bore the egg, a magical purple chicken or a duck, even crazier.
Anyway, I love this episode. Especially when Becca, Defender of the Science, explained about Quantum physics theory of time though I didn’t fully understand it.
Melanie is gone through a hole, maybe its another way? maybe she’s pulled by the egg to the zenith where she belongs but before she reached the ground, I doubt she’ll be in good shape. Or maybe she’s going to Arcadia, Sept 28 Resurrection + Resurrection Revealed.
I just love this show and Sir Troy and Sir Wayne, stop bullying Rebecca. Please.
And one more thing, I know we agreed that no more Lost reference but this episode has so much allusions to Lost, the bush moving, the trees dropping, the doctor, the hole. No I was just kidding, Lost is Lost and Under the dome is under the …hmp ratings?. And to be honest it’s insulting to LOST.
Them showing Hunter’s abs is completely unnecessary. Not a game changer.
Okay, too long comment for today, haha, you make a wonderful podcast and the least thing we could do is to participate and participate well. And participating is our pleasure.
Happy podcasting til finale! Thanks Sir Wayne for the twitter follow!
